Sodium hydroxide

In industry, sodium hydroxide is usually referred to as caustic soda, or called fire alkali or caustic lime. This is because when a relatively concentrated sodium hydroxide solution splashes onto the skin, it can corrode the epidermis and cause burns. It has a dissolving effect on proteins and is highly irritating and corrosive (due to its dissolving effect on proteins, compared with acid burns, alkali burns are less likely to heal). When 0.02% solution is dropped into rabbit eyes, it can cause corneal epithelial damage. The LD50 of sodium hydroxide in mice peritoneal cavity is 40 mg/kg, and in rabbits it is 500 mg/kg by oral administration. Dust irritates the eyes and respiratory tract, corroding the nasal septum; splashing onto the skin, especially onto the mucous membranes, can produce soft crusts, which can penetrate deep tissues and cause scarring after burning; splashing into the eyes, not only damages the cornea, but also can damage the deep tissues of the eyes, and in severe cases, can lead to blindness; accidental ingestion can cause digestive tract burns, colic, mucosal erosion, vomiting of bloody gastric contents, bloody diarrhea, and sometimes hoarseness, difficulty in swallowing, shock, perforation of the digestive tract, and later, intestinal stenosis. Due to its strong alkalinity, it can cause pollution to water bodies, and attention should be paid to plants and aquatic organisms. Sodium hydroxide is a basic chemical raw material and is widely used in various fields such as soap, paper making, textiles, artificial fibers, dyes, medicine, photography, plastics, petroleum, etc.
