Candida antarctica Lipase B (CALB) is a widely studied and utilized enzyme due to its unique catalytic properties and broad applications across various industries. It is a serine hydrolase belonging to the α/β-hydrolase family, characterized by its high resistance to solvents and temperatures, and its ability to catalyze reactions involving both water-soluble and non-water-soluble substrates.
CALB is used in the synthesis of chiral compounds, which are crucial for the production of pharmaceuticals. Its high enantioselectivity makes it an ideal biocatalyst for the resolution of racemic mixtures. Recent studies have explored the use of CALB in the kinetic resolution of β-lactam enantiomers, showing high enantiomeric excess (ee) values and improved yields. CALB is employed in the transesterification of triglycerides to produce biodiesel. Its ability to catalyze reactions in non-aqueous media makes it suitable for converting oils and fats into biofuels
