Nervonic Acid

Neuroacid is a monounsaturated fatty acid with a 24-carbon main chain and a single double bond originating from the 9th carbon at the methyl end, which is in a cis configuration. It is a metabolite found in the brains of aging mice.

Neuronic acid exists in sphingolipids in the white matter of the human brain. It is the only miraculous substance that has a dual role in brain development, repairing nerve fibers, unblocking damaged nerve pathways in the brain, and promoting the regeneration of nerve cells. Neuralic acid is of great significance in the biosynthesis of myelin proteins in nerve cells. Together with lignic acid, it accounts for 60% of the acylated fatty acids in white matter sphingomyelin. In demyelinating diseases such as adrenoleukodystrophy and multiple sclerosis, the amount of neuronal acid acylated into sphingolipids is significantly reduced. Supplements rich in this fatty acid have been used to help treat these demyelinating diseases.
